SKYCACHE(tm) RENOVATES INTERNET THROUGH SATELLITE DATA DELIVERY TECHNOLOGY
SkyCache Marries Satellite
Broadcast With Large Cache Community
ISPCON, Baltimore Convention Center, March 17, 1998- SkyCache,
Inc. introduced today at ISPCON its first service, SkyCache, a
cache-enhancing service that will radically change the way data traverses
the Internet.
Bigger pipes aren't the solution for the most popular Web traffic and
streaming media," remarks Doug Humphrey, President and Chief
Executive Officer of SkyCache. "The Internet needs a fundamental
change in how repetitive high-volume data is moved. SkyCache will be the
catalyst for that change."
The SkyCache service uses satellite broadcast to constantly load the
most often requested Internet Web and news traffic directly into
customer-side, ICP-compliant caches. In addition, SkyCache uses reporting
statistics from customer-side caches to build a large cache community.
The combination of satellite broadcast technology with the creation of a
large cache community offers a superior solution to the traditional
stand-alone cache. ISPs and Fortune 1000 WAN/LANs have the potential to
reduce 30-50% in current bandwidth utilization.
SkyCache utilizes WavePhore, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: WAVO) advanced satellite
receivers and uplink equipment to create this new Internet data delivery
network. WavePhore is installing one-meter satellite dishes and four
megabit per second IDR V1000 variable bit rate satellite receivers with
Ethernet output at every SkyCache customer site. WavePhore has also
installed its network management system at SkyCache's Laurel, Maryland
uplink facility, which is expected to serve more than 200 locations within
the next twelve months.
ADVANTAGES OF SKYCACHE
By receiving periodic updates of the most popular
Internet Web and news traffic via satellite and bypassing congested
Network Access Points (NAPs), ISPs and WAN/LAN operators experience a
dramatic reduction in bandwidth usage, greater Internet response times,
and a substantial reduction in communication costs. End users also reap
faster response times since the most commonly requested Web site pages are
stored at local servers.
