SKYCACHE GIVES STAMP OF APPROVAL TO COBALT NETWORKS' CACHEQUBE(tm)
Laurel, MD (August 17, 1998) - SkyCache Inc., the nation's premier
high-speed datacasting company revolutionizing the Internet today welcomed Cobalt Networks
CacheQube(tm) into the growing number of "SkyCache Compatible" open standards
caching solutions. Cobalt Networks, Inc. is a leading manufacturer and provider of
affordable Internet and intranet server solutions.
"Cobalt's CacheQube enables ISPs to offer improved web access through a
simple and cost effective solution," stated Doug Humphrey, president and CEO of
SkyCache. "We feel the CacheQube is particularly appealing for the small to mid-sized
ISP."
ISPs can use the CacheQube(tm), a high-performance, low-cost, dedicated Web
caching server, to maximize bandwidth usage while providing faster Web access to
end-users. SkyCache, through a combination of its patent-pending Reactive Caching system
and cache prepopulation, provides superior performance by supplementing a stand-alone
cache with high-quality data delivered by satellite broadcast technology. The SkyCache
service enables ISPs to add on more customers with existing leased line capacity and
deliver substantially faster web page response times in many cases.
"By combining Skycache's leading service with Cobalt's server solutions we
are able to minimize the high bandwidth costs ISPs face," said Stephen DeWitt,
president and CEO of Cobalt Networks, Inc. "SkyCache is a good complement for
creating a cost-effective solution for our customers."
Advantages of the SkyCache/Cobalt Solution
A Cobalt CacheQube can be installed in less than 15 minutes and immediately begins to
eliminate redundant Web and FTP traffic on the wide area network. The Cobalt CacheQube
significantly increases the Internet's responsiveness to local users, and within hours it
can reduce bandwidth demand by as much as 60 percent. It is a fraction of the cost of
alternative appliances and imposes none of the administrative burdens required of
traditional proxy caching solutions.
SkyCache uses satellite broadcast technology to constantly load the most often
requested Internet Web and directly into customer-side ICP-compliant caches. In addition,
SkyCache uses reporting statistics from customers to build a large cache community for the
reactive caching component of the service.
ISPs and enterprises will realize reduced bandwidth and communications costs
plus faster response times when the most popular, constantly updated Internet and news
traffic is delivered via SkyCache's satellite broadcast service to Cobalt's CacheQube
appliances. End users reap faster response times since the most commonly requested Web
pages are stored at local Web cache servers.
SkyCache, by virtue of being a true broadcast mechanism to deliver data, solves
updating and communications problems across distributed caching systems implemented by
Tier 1 ISPs and enterprises. Since all caches are constantly and directly refreshed with
the most frequently accessed Web pages via satellite, terrestrial leased line bandwidth is
not consumed by cache communication and data updating, nor is it necessary to implement a
multi-tiered hierarchical infrastructure.
