WIRELESS BROADBAND INTERNET SYSTEM ADVANCES WITH AGREEMENT BETWEEN SATELLITE MANUFACTURER AND STRATOSPHERIC PLATFORM FIRM

Europe’s Largest Volume Satellite Manufacturing Line to Produce Communications Payloads for Sky Station International’s Stratospheric Internet System

ROME and WASHINGTON D.C., August 12, 1996: Finmeccanica S.p.A Alenia Aerospazio, Divisione Spazio ("Alenia") and Sky Station International, Inc., ("Sky Station") announced today that they had signed an agreement intended to lead to the production of 250 stratospheric telecommunications payloads over the next seven years. The stratospheric payloads will operate in the 47 GHz frequency range and will serve as the backbone for the world’s first globally available broadband wireless telecommunications system. The principal application of the new technology is expected to be wireless broadband Internet service.

"There were two main reasons we chose to work with Alenia," commented Alexander Haig, President of Sky Station. "First, they have the world’s largest volume satellite production and processing facility used for the dozens of low earth orbit GlobalStar satellites. Second, they have a successful track record of building and launching millimeter wave communication transponders. Our 250 stratospheric payloads will benefit from both their volume production and millimeter wave frequency experience."

"We are very excited to help inaugurate the world’s first stratospheric telecommunications network," commented Leo Savarese, Director of Business Development for Alenia. "The stratospheric platforms have numerous benefits for wide-area coverage, portable user terminals, and broadband Internet service."

Sky Station broadband Internet user terminals are ultimately expected to cost under U.S. $100 and to offer T1/E1 service for as little as a dollar a day. Further information can be found on the web site http://www.skystation.com
