US/AFRICA VENTURES, INC. JOINS SKY STATION INTERNATIONAL AS STRATEGIC PARTNER

Washington, D.C., January 1, 1998: Sky Station International, Inc., the lead developer of stratospheric relays for wireless broadband telecommunications services, announced today that it had engaged US/Africa Ventures, Inc. as its strategic partner for the continent of Africa. Stratospheric platforms are lighter-than-air vehicles placed at fixed positions approximately 21 kilometers above the earth’s surface. From this altitude they can provide superior telecommunications services to large urbanized areas.

"US/Africa Ventures will play a key role in bringing the versatility of Stratospheric Telecommunications to Africa," said Alexander P. Haig, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sky Station.

"We recognized the power of Sky Station's system to help realize the potential of African nations by providing a high capacity, high density telecommunications infrastructure without a costly or difficult terrestrial buildout," said Roger D. Shearer, Chief Executive Officer of US/Africa Ventures. "Along with Sky Station International, we are pleased to bring this promising technology to Africa's urban and rural areas alike."

US/Africa Ventures will work to implement the Sky Station system in Africa and ensure that services are offered which meet the telecommunications requirements of the continent.

The Sky Station system is scheduled for initial implementation in the year 2000, with commercial service commencing the following year. In October 1996, the United States Government advised the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that it intended to authorize forty Sky Station stratospheric platforms over major U.S. cities. In November 1997, at the World Radiotelecommunications Conference (WRC-97), the ITU approved Sky Station's frequency allocation request thereby opening the door to deployment of Sky Station services worldwide. Since that time, Sky Station has announced industrial partnerships with Thomson-CSF Communications and Finmeccanica S.p.A. Alenia Aerospazio Space Division and will soon announce the balance of the European industrial team that will build the entire system.
