Ralf Schoebel : "Software patents could be damaging for the economy of small european software companies"

Intradat develops orginal software in C++. We were the first to create a professional eCommerce solution for Linux 2 years ago. Our product, VShop, includes an innovative programming language which allows to develop eCommerce applications much faster than with traditionnal approaches. Our company started with 3. We are now 15 and have about 400 custommers.

We think that software patents, as they stand in the US, could be damaging for the economy of small european software companies if they were introduced as such in Europe. There are so many new patentable programming techniques emerging every day in the software industry and it is really impossible to keep up to date. Moreover, we can not afford a couple of attorneys cheking all the patent rights in our products and stay competitive at the same time in the software market. And, because it is quite expensive to file a patent and enforce it, we can not either really benefit from patent protection on our products.
