SKYCACHE
SECURES $20 MILLION IN SECOND ROUND FINANCING CAPITAL FROM CARLYLE, INTEL
CORPORATION, IVP, AND NEA TO BE USED TO AID WORLDWIDE Expansion, Technology Advancement
for Leading Internet Broadcast Infrastructure Company
Laurel, MD, June 29, 1999:
SkyCache, Inc., a leading satellite broadcast
overlay network for the Internet, announced today that it has closed a $20 million second
round of financing from four venture investors: Carlyle Venture Partners, L.P. of
Washington, D.C.; Intel Corporation of Santa Clara, Ca.; Institutional Venture Partners
(IVP) of Menlo Park, Ca.; and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) of Reston, Va.
The new capital infusion will help enable SkyCache to dramatically increase its broadcast
capacity up to 45 megabytes.
"With the introduction of cable modems and DSL, customer expectations for faster Web
performance and high-quality streaming media are placing a tremendous amount of pressure
on ISPs," said Suzanne Hooper King, partner at lead investor NEA.
"SkyCache provides instant relief from this pressure at a reduced cost to ISPs and
Internet content providers. It's really about keeping traffic off the Net to help speed up
performance."
SkyCache is a leading high-speed datacasting service using satellite broadcast technology
to move Internet traffic faster and more efficiently to Internet service providers (ISPs)
and corporations. The Laurel, Md.-based company is operating and expanding a global
broadcast network to improve the movement of Web content, Usenet News and IP audio/video
over the Internet, as well as to provide for FTP mirroring and Web site replication.
SkyCache currently serves over 100 North American and European customers representing
millions of Internet users.
"We are pleased to have these experienced venture investors join us. Aided by this
new funding, we believe our business model will allow the power of satellite
communications to take its place as a major component in the worldwide Internet
infrastructure," said Doug Humphrey, founder and CEO of SkyCache.
"SkyCache will be among the first pieces of Internet infrastructure to reach users
worldwide, helping bring the dream of a truly global Internet to reality. It is an
exciting opportunity, and we are honored by the investments of NEA, IVP, and Intel, and by
the ongoing support of The Carlyle Group."
There is a strong demand for faster delivery of Internet content and the realization that
the existing Internet infrastructure will need improvements to handle streaming media,
particularly video content. There is an urgency with which providers of all types of
Internet services are searching for a solution.
"Combining Internet services with other media such as broadcast television will help
enable a new class of enhanced content to consumers," said Claude Leglise, vice
president and general manager, Intel's Home Products Group. "High-speed satellite
datacasting services like those provided by SkyCache can help enable Intel-based Internet
appliance solutions to deliver this class of enhanced content to a wide base of
consumers."
"More fiber isn't a cure-all for Internet bottlenecks, especially those associated
with streaming media and Web content replication," said Tom Dyal, partner at IVP.
"SkyCache has the vision for a broadcast overlay network to improve Internet
performance around the world."
Funding from the four investors will also be used to help the company move into growing
markets in Asia and Latin America.
NEA is one of the industry's premier venture capital firms. For 21 years, NEA has
practiced classic venture capital by investing in early-stage companies and working with
management to nurture and build companies of real and lasting value. With $1.6 billion
under management, more than 110 NEA companies have gone public, including over 75 since
1991. As part of the investment, Peter Barris and Suzanne Hooper King from NEA will join
the company's board of directors.
IVP has invested in ventures since 1974 and now manages more than $1 billion, having
funded more than 250 companies. With its track record of over 65 IPOs and over 30
successful "IPO-like" acquisitions, IVP has consistently funded companies that
have become dominant players throughout many technology industries.
The Carlyle Group is a global private equity firm with $3.5 billion of capital under
management and a proven track record for investing in rapidly growing industries and
companies. Carlyle Venture Partners, a venture fund created by The Carlyle Group to invest
in high-growth opportunities, provides innovative management teams with capital, strategic
advice and industry relationships to accelerate company growth.
