SKYCACHE FACT SHEET

Headquarters

9885 North Washington Blvd.
Laurel, MD 20723

Company Overview

SkyCache is building and operating a global satellite broadcast overlay network to improve the movement of Internet information, including World Wide Web content, Usenet News, audio/video, streaming media, and web site replication. The company currently offers service in North America and Europe and expects to offer service world-wide by the end of the year.

Established:      1997

Financing

A total of $26 million in private venture funding has been secured. Carlyle Venture Partners L.P. provided $6 million in first round funding in June 1998. A second round of $20 million in funding was closed in June 1999 with New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Carlyle Venture Partners L.P, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), and Intel Corporation participating.

Overview

SkyCache uses satellite broadcast technology to instantly move high-bandwidth and high-demand Internet content directly to the "last mile" on ISP and Enterprise networks, including popular web pages, Usenet News, and streaming media.

With SkyCache, ISPs and Enterprises can maximize bandwidth utilization of present Internet connectivity, adding on more users for the same amount of existing bandwidth. End users reap faster response times since the most commonly requested web pages are constantly being delivered directly into local web cache servers without having to use existing bandwidth and streaming media is cleanly transported without having to traverse a multitude of network exchange points.

By virtue of being a true broadcast mechanism to deliver data, SkyCache solves updating and communications problems across distributed caching and content replications systems implemented by Tier 1 ISPs and Enterprises. Since all servers are constantly and directly refreshed with the most frequently and recent data via satellite, terrestrial leased line bandwidth is not consumed by inter-server communications and bulk updating, nor is it necessary to implement a dedicated private network infrastructure for updates.

North America and Europe. Asia and Latin America are expected to be brought on line by 4Q99.
